BALTIMORE, Md. – Hampton University senior guard
Darrion Pellum scored a career-high 36 points, but it was not enough for the Pirates, as they dropped another tough road game Monday, 68-56 to Morgan State at Hill Field House.
The Pirates (6-12, 2-3 MEAC) have now lost three in a row and are 0-9 on the road this season.
Pellum (Hampton, Va.) went 12-for-28 from the floor, including five 3-pointers on his way to a career night.
As a team, the Pirates were 32.3 percent (21-for-65) from the floor and made just nine of their 17 free throws.
The Bears (4-11, 2-2 MEAC) finished the game with three players in double figures, led by Aric Brooks with 18 points off the bench, while Ameer Ali added 14 points. Larry Bastfield also added 10 points of his own in the win.
The Bears scored 28 points off the bench, while the Pirates were able to score 24 points in the paint.
Senior forward
Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) finished the night with nine points and seven rebounds.
Hampton led 19-15 with 11:56 left in the first half after Pellum sank a pair of free throws, before Morgan State scored four straight to tie the game at 19-19 at the 10:55 mark. An Agbelese free throw at the 6:56 mark put Hampton up 26-24, but Morgan State went on a 7-0 run to go up 31-26 with 5:13 left in the half after Brooks hit two free throws.
The Bears led 33-32 at the half.
Senior guard
Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) tied the game at 39-39 with 17:01 to play with a fastbreak layup, but Morgan State took a 43-39 lead after scoring four straight points before Pellum drained a trey with 13:53 to play to pull the Pirates within one.
Pellum's jumper with 7:39 left cut Morgan State's lead to 52-50, but the Pirates never got any closer; the Bears led by as many as 12, as late as with 52 seconds left when Bastfield sank a free throw to push the game to its final margin.
