HAMPTON TRACK GEARING UP FOR 2012 MEAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Meet Notes | Schedule of Events

LANDOVER, Md. –
The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams will compete in the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.

The Lady Pirates will look to defend their indoor crown from last season, when they tallied a school- and MEAC-record 188.5 points, while the Pirates will look to improve upon last year's second-place effort and end Norfolk State's streak of six straight indoor titles.

The Lady Pirates have won eight of the last nine MEAC indoor titles.

Head coach Maurice Pierce was named the meet's Most Outstanding Coach last year, while Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and former Lady Pirate Racquel Vassell won four event titles to share Most Outstanding Runner honors.

Denmark finished second in last year's long jump with a mark of 5.78 meters, while jumping 11.82 meters to finish second in the triple jump. She also came in tied for fourth in the high jump at 1.65 meters.

Sophomore Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) finished second in both the 800-meter run (2:11.21) and the mile run (5:03.17) in last year's MEAC Indoor Championships, while sophomore Devyn Thompson (Chicago, Ill.) ran an 18:49.00 to finish third in last year's 5,000-meter run.

The Lady Pirates are also the defending MEAC indoor 4x400-meter relay champions.

Senior Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran in the 60-meter dash at the 105th annual Millrose Games at the Armory on Saturday at the Armory Track & Field Center, coming in third with a time of 6.70 – which included a 6.25 at the 55-meter split, which was also the third-fastest in the field.

Dixon is the defending MEAC champion in the 60-meter dash, thanks to a MEAC-record 6.69 last season in the final. He has already qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in that event, thanks to the 6.60 he ran last month at the Penn State National Invitational.

The Pirates have finished second in the team standings in the last two MEAC Indoor Championships.

A schedule of events can be found at www.MEACsports.com, and the site will also run live results throughout the weekend.

Admission for the MEAC Championships is free on Thursday and $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
