TENNIS FALLS TO JACKSONVILLE AND BETHUNE-COOKMAN

HAMPTON, VA. – The Hampton University men's and women's tennis teams dropped two matches each this past weekend, falling at Jacksonville and Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.

The Pirates (0-3) fell 4-0 to Jacksonville on Saturday at the Keith Watson Family Tennis Complex, while the Lady Pirates (1-2) also fell 4-0. Later that afternoon, the men fell 6-1 to Bethune-Cookman with the women falling 7-0 at the City Island Tennis Complex in Daytona Beach.

On the men's side, the Dolphins (2-3) won all four singles matches.  Alvin Fludd (Washington, D.C.) fell 6-1, 6-0 to Fernando Bano Lopez in the No. 1 position, while sophomore Advait Kirtane (Toronto, Ontario) dropped his match in the No. 2 position 6-1, 6-0 to Jose Fantova. Kenneth Greene (Philadelphia, PA) lost 6-2, 6-1 to Casagrande, and freshman Lakshmana Satchihananthan (Toronto, Ontario) fell 6-1, 6-2 to Martinez.

In anticipation of inclement weather, the doubles portion of the match was skipped.

The Lady Dolphins (2-3) also swept all four singles matches. Senior Barenese Myers (Beverly Hills, Calif.)fell 6-0, 6-0 to Aline Staudt in the No. 1 position, while senior Calisia Reid (Jamaica, West Indies) fell 6-1, 6-0 to Natalia Melibeu in the No. 2 position.

In the No.3 position, Senior Maria Ycaza (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was unable to gain the match point in a 3rd set tie break due to the fact Jacksonville had earned its four points before Ycaza's match was over.  Tabita Daolio (Centro Campinas, Brazil) fell 6-3 6-1 to Bezerra in her match in the No. 4 position and Virginia Iwinski beat Danielle Butler (Hawthorne, Calif.) 6-1, 6-2.

On Saturday evening, the Pirates lost five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches to Bethune-Cookman (2-4). Belucci defeated Andrew Williams 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 position.

Fludd dropped his No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-2 to Marc Misanovic. Despite rolling his ankle in the singles match against Jacksonville, Advait Kirtane defeated Artem Vassilieve 6-0 6-2 in the No. 2 position. Kenneth Greene fell 6-0 6-1 to Moritz Pronath in the No. 3 position. Laks lost 6-4, 6-2 to Gilbert Kibet, and Isaiah Stewart fell 6-0, 6-0 to Kip Jackson.

Fludd and Kirtane defeated Misanovic and Vasslieve in the No. 1 doubles position 8-5. Lobelo and Varon defeated Laks and Greene 8-0 in the No. 2 position, while Stewart and Williams fell 8-0 to Garvito and Kibet.

Bethune-Cookman (4-2) swept all six singles and all three doubles matches on Sunday against the Lady Pirates. Myers dropped her No. 1 singles match 6-1 6-2 to Szaboova, while Reid fell 6-1, 6-0 to Speller the No. 2 position.

Kajiwara won 2-0 in the No. 3 position over Ycaza; she retired from the match due to fatigue. Robakidze defeated Daolio 6-2, 6-1. Butler fell 6-1 6-3 to Peterson-Paul, and Renee Henry (St. George's Antigua & Barbuda) fell 6-2 6-4 to Chinchilla.

Spellers and Peterson-Paul defeated Myers and Ycaza 8-6 in the No. 1 doubles position, while Reid and Daolio fell 8-5 to Szaboova and Robakidze in the No. 2 position. Chinchilla and Kajiwara defeated Butler and Henry 8-0.
