FOOTBALL GEARING UP FOR ANNUAL BATTLE OF THE BAY

NORFOLK, Va. –
The Hampton University football team, fresh off its first win of the season, will cross the Hampton Bay Bridge for the annual Battle of the Bay against rival Norfolk State at Dick Price Stadium at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Pirates (1-5, 1-1 MEAC), in their fifth season under head coach Donovan Rose, picked up their first win of the season this past Saturday by beating North Carolina A&T 31-26 for Homecoming, while the Spartans (2-4, 2-1 MEAC), under ninth-year head coach Pete Adrian, are coming off a 14-7 loss to Delaware State this past Saturday.

Freshman quarterback Bryan Bailey (Woodruff, S.C.) made his first start of the season this past Saturday against North Carolina A&T, completing 14 of his 26 passes for 90 yards and three touchdowns. He completed passes to seven different receivers in the Pirates' first win of the season, and he was named MEAC Rookie of the Week.

Senior running back Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) he ranks tied for seventh in the MEAC in receptions, averaging 3.7 per game. Chisholm is also 10th in the MEAC in receiving yards, averaging 37.2 yards per game.

Senior linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is one of the bright spots of the Pirates defense so far this season, ranking second in the MEAC in tackles with 10.8 per game. He has a 65 total tackles so far this season (27 of them solo efforts), and Tyler has recorded double-digit tackles in four of Hampton's first six games – including a season-high 17 stops on Sept. 21 at Coastal Carolina.

Tyler has 317 total tackles for his career, which currently ranks him fourth in program history.

Senior defensive end Carvin Johnson (New Orleans, La.) currently ranks fifth in the MEAC in tackles, averaging 9.8 per game, and he is second on the team with 59 tackles so far this season – 36 of which were solo efforts.

Junior Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) is currently fourth in the conference in kickoff returns, averaging 25.1 yards per return.

The Pirates are 24-25-1 all-time against Norfolk State, and Hampton has won 12 of the last 16 meetings – including a 28-14 win at Armstrong Stadium last season. The two teams have exchanged wins in the last six meetings, and Norfolk State has won the last three times the teams have met at Dick Price Stadium. Hampton's last win at Dick Price Stadium was in 2005, when the Pirates won 55-14.

Hampton is 195-166-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the MEAC after going 3-5 in the conference last season. Hampton is 9-9 against Bethune-Cookman; 24-14 against Delaware State; 8-13 against Florida A&M; 47-41-1 against Howard; 24-36-2 against Morgan State; 24-25-1 against Norfolk State; 26-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 17-6 against North Carolina Central; 5-0 against Savannah State; and 11-7 against South Carolina State.

Since joining the MEAC, the Pirates have won the conference championship five times, including three straight in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

The Pirates have seven road contests this season, and are 0-4 away from Armstrong Stadium after falling 42-9 at Western Illinois, 31-7 at William & Mary, 50-17 at Coastal Carolina, and 30-6 at South Carolina State.
