FOOTBALL KEEPS ROLLING, BLASTS DELAWARE STATE

Box Score
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team kept the momentum rolling Saturday afternoon at Armstrong Stadium, picking up its third straight win with a 30-7 blowout of Delaware State.

The Pirates are now 3-5 on the season and 3-1 in MEAC play.

Freshman quarterback Bryan Bailey (Woodruff, S.C.) completed nine of 16 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown – his third straight game with a score – while junior Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded his second straight 100-yard rushing game, tallying 127 yards on 14 carries and a score.

Redshirt-freshman Twarn Mixson (Charlotte, N.C.) had a team-high 82 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Hampton struck first with 5:12 to go in the first quarter, capping off a seven-play, 18-yard drive with a 28-yard field goal from freshman Anthony Prevost (Chesterfield, Va.). Junior Khambrel McGee (Miami, Fla.) set up that drive by intercepting Cory Murphy near midfield and returning the ball to the Hornets' 29-yard line.

Delaware State turned the ball over on the ensuing drive, and the Pirates responded by going nine yards in just three plays, going up 10-0 after junior Morris Brailsford (Westbury, N.Y.) found the end zone from one yard out with 2:51 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets (3-5, 3-2 MEAC) got on the board with 49 seconds left in the half, when Murphy found Milton Williams from 15 yards out to cut the Pirates' lead to 10-7.

After Delaware State failed to score on its first possession of the second half, the Pirates needed just one play, as Washington took the handoff 79 yards to the end zone to give Hampton a 17-7 lead with 11:53 left in the quarter.

It was the longest rushing score of the season for Hampton, and the first scoring run of at least 70 yards since Nov. 12, 2011, when Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) scored from 72 yards against Delaware State.

Prevost added a 26-yard field goal with 2:25 left in the quarter to put Hampton up 20-7. He later added a 34-yard field goal with 9:46 left in the fourth quarter to cap a six-play, 29-yard drive and put the Pirates up 23-7.

Hampton's final strike of the day came with 3:20 to play, when Bailey hit Mixson for a 75-yard score to put the Pirates up 30-7.

Senior linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) led the way with 16 tackles, giving him 346 in his career. That is the second-highest career tackle total in program history, and the most for a Hampton player in Div. I program history.

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they hit the road to take on Morgan State at 1 p.m. For more information on Hampton University football, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
