FOOTBALL TO HIT THE ROAD TO FACE BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –
The Hampton University football team will hit the road for the final time in the 2013 season on Saturday, when the Pirates take on Bethune-Cookman at Municipal Stadium at 4 p.m.

The Pirates (4-6, 4-2 MEAC), in their fifth season under head coach Donovan Rose, got back into the win column this past Saturday with a 29-21 home win over North Carolina Central, while the nationally-ranked Wildcats (8-2, 5-1 MEAC), under fourth-year head coach Brian Jenkins, fell 27-24 at home to Norfolk State this past Saturday to snap a five-game winning streak.

Junior Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) is currently averaging 24.4 yards per return so far this season. He had 91 return yards against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 14, including a 61-yard return in the second half. He is also third in the MEAC in all-purpose yards with 115.3 per contest, and he is eighth in the MEAC in rushing with 54.0 yards per game on the ground.

Washington has also recorded at least 100 rushing yards in three of his last four games – including a career-best 137 yards on 15 carries in a 30-27 loss at Morgan State on Nov. 3.

Freshman quarterback Bryan Bailey (Woodruff, S.C.) is 74-for-129 through the air for 891 yards and six touchdowns this season. He is completing 57.4 percent of his passes and has a team-best efficiency rating of 121.43. He has at least one touchdown pass in four of the five games he's started.

So far this season, senior Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) ranks fourth in the MEAC in receptions, averaging 4.1 per game. Chisholm is also eighth in receiving yards per game, with 42.8 per contest, and his 97.4 all-purpose yards per contest are the fifth-best average in the MEAC.

Senior linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is one of the bright spots of the Pirates defense so far this season, ranking second in the MEAC with 11.4 tackles per game. He has 114 total tackles so far this season (47 of them solo efforts), and he is 23 tackles shy of the all-time record of 389 set by Gareth Bonds.

Sophomore defensive end Miles Grooms (Richmond, Va.) has been a force in the backfield this season, currently ranking second in the MEAC in both tackles for loss (15.5 for 81 yards) and sacks (8.5 total, 0.85 per game). He had a team-high 3.5 sacks in a 30-7 win over Delaware State on Oct. 26, and he leads the Pirates with 15 quarterback hurries and four forced fumbles so far this season.

The Pirates are 9-9 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, though the Wildcats have won each of the last five meetings – including a 38-26 win at Armstrong Stadium last season. Hampton last defeated Bethune-Cookman in 2007, when the Pirates took a 31-24 win in Daytona Beach, Fla. for the last of four straight wins in the series.

Hampton is 4-4 against the Wildcats in Daytona Beach.

The Pirates are 198-167-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after going 3-5 in the conference last season. Hampton is 9-9 against Bethune-Cookman; 25-14 against Delaware State; 8-13 against Florida A&M; 47-41-1 against Howard; 24-37-2 against Morgan State; 25-25-1 against Norfolk State; 26-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 18-6 against North Carolina Central; 5-0 against Savannah State; and 11-7 against South Carolina State.

The Pirates have seven road contests this season, and are 1-5 away from Armstrong Stadium after falling 42-9 at Western Illinois, 31-7 at William & Mary, 50-17 at Coastal Carolina, and 30-6 at South Carolina State.

Hampton's first road win of the season came on Oct. 12 with a 27-17 win at rival Norfolk State, but the Pirates fell 30-27 at Morgan State on Nov. 2.
