HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will return home on Saturday for its last game before the holiday, as the Lady Pirates welcome Kansas State to the HU Convocation Center for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
The Lady Pirates (8-3) have won three straight games after a comeback 50-47 win at Drexel Wednesday night. Senior guard
Nicole Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) led the way with 18 points – 12 of which came in the second half.
Senior forward
Alyssa Bennett (Hampton, Va.) added 13 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season, and freshman guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) chipped in 11 points.
Redshirt-sophomore forward
Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds.
The Wildcats (5-3), in their 18th season under head coach Deb Patterson, were picked to finish ninth in the Big XII this season, and Kansas State's roster boasts five true freshmen and two redshirt-freshmen to rank as one of the youngest squads in the nation.
Kansas State has won three straight games following a 73-64 win over UC-Santa Barbara on Sunday, and the Wildcats are led by freshman guard Leticia Romero, who is averaging 11.8 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Freshman forward Breanna Lewis is grabbing a team-best 6.1 rebounds per contest.
Hampton is 0-1 all-time against Kansas State, having fallen 78-42 to the Wildcats back on Feb. 20, 1996 in Manhattan, Kan. This will be Kansas State's first-ever trip to Hampton, and the Wildcats' first trip to the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1984.
Hampton is 1-4 all-time against schools currently in the Big XII, having gone 0-1 against Iowa State; 1-1 against Kansas; 0-1 against Kansas State; and 0-1 against Texas. The Lady Pirates' win over Kansas – their lone win over a Big XII program – came on Nov. 23, 2001.
Hampton has never faced Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, or West Virginia.
The Lady Pirates were a perfect 11-0 at home last season, and in their four-plus years under head coach
David Six, they are 43-7 in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton had not lost at home since Jan. 28, 2012, when they fell 69-66 to Coppin State in overtime, prior to a loss to American on Dec. 4. Hampton had won 16 straight home games before that defeat.
Hampton is 4-1 at home this season after defeating Bethune-Cookman 43-35 on Dec. 9.
