HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against Coppin State on Saturday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, winning the first game 9-1 in six innings before taking the second game 3-2 in extra innings.
The Lady Pirates (27-22, 13-1 MEAC) have won 16 of their last 20 games.
Coppin State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the first game after a home run, before Hampton tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning following an RBI triple from sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.).
Junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) gave the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead in the second with an RBI single to left field.
Hampton blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to take a 6-1 lead. The first run scored when Vallejo reached on an error. Freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.), the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, brought in two runs with a double to left field.
Freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) then doubled down the left field line to bring in McCoy.
The Lady Pirates scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, starting with an RBI double to left field by McCoy. Langlois then reached on an error, scoring Vallejo, before sophomore
Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) singled home the final run of the game.
Wilkins, Vallejo, and McCoy each had two hits in the first game, while Vallejo and McCoy each drove in a team-high two runs. Wilkins scored three times.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up her 20th win of the season, scattering four hits over six innings of work and striking out 10. It was her fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
Hampton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of the second game, after Langlois singled to center field to bring home Wilkins. Freshman
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) singled to left field in the fourth inning to bring home freshman
McKalee Rouse (Aledo, Texas) and give Hampton a 2-0 lead.
Coppin State (13-22, 6-8 MEAC) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth.
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh inning, pushing the game to extra frames, marking the sixth time this season the Lady Pirates have gone to extra innings. Hampton is 5-1 in those games this season.
Langlois won the game for Hampton in the bottom of the 10th, singling down the left field line to bring home Wilkins.
Langlois went 4-for-5 at the plate in the second game, driving in two runs.
Jackson went all 10 innings to pick up her 21st win of the season, recording another 12 strikeouts. For the day she struck out 22 batters in 16 innings of work.
