HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame has announced its Class of 2013, a class that includes former Hampton University coaches, and husband and wife, James and Phyllis LaVerne Sweat.
James Sweat coached the women's basketball program from 1981-88, going 183-44 in his seven seasons. He is the program's all-time leader in wins and winning percentage (.806), and he was the coach of the 1987-88 team that went 33-1 and won the NCAA Division II national championship.
During James Sweat's tenure, the Lady Pirates won CIAA titles in 1985 and 1987. He was a three-time CIAA Coach of the Year while at Hampton, and he coached four straight CIAA Players of the Year – Darlene Chaney (1985), Sheila Hillman (1986), and Jackie Dolberry (1987, 1988).
Between his career at both Hampton and Norfolk State, James Sweat has over 500 career wins.
Phyllis LaVerne Sweat was a track & field and cross country coach at both Hampton and Norfolk State, winning more than a dozen combined CIAA championships. She was also an assistant coach for Team USA at the Summer Olympics in 2000.
She was named CIAA Coach of the Year nine times during her collegiate career, and in 1981, while with Hampton, she was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year. In 1991, she was named NCAA Div. II Coach of the Decade.
In 2011, she was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Hall of Fame. LaVerne Sweat was also the first female president of the CIAA.
The rest of the Class of 2013 includes former Old Dominion basketball player Leo Anthony, longtime Maury High School baseball coach Jack Baker, baseball announcer Marty Brennaman, the late ODU baseball legend Bud Metheny, and former ODU basketball coach Paul Webb.
The Class of 2013 will be inducted on Oct. 22 at Norfolk Scope. Admission will be $65 per person and $400 for a table of eight. Reservations can be made by calling (757) 622-2222, ext. 101.
