Game Notes
CONWAY, S.C. – The Hampton University football team will hit the road in search of its first win of the season on Saturday, squaring off against Coastal Carolina at Brooks Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
The Pirates (0-3), in their fifth season under head coach
Donovan Rose, fell 30-27 at home to Tennessee Tech past Saturday, while the Chanticleers (3-0), under second-year head coach Joe Moglia, are coming off a 51-32 win at Eastern Kentucky this past Saturday.
Sophomore quarterback
Jaylian Williamson (Chesapeake, Va.) threw for a season-high 190 yards against Tennessee Tech this past Saturday, going 22-for-36 in the air with two touchdowns. Williamson is fourth in the MEAC in passing with 154.7 yards per game, and his 111.8 pass efficiency rating is the fifth-best in the conference.
So far this season, senior running back
Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) ranks sixth in the MEAC in receptions, averaging four per game. Chisholm is also 10th in the MEAC in receiving yards, averaging 41.0 yards per game.
Special teams has been a strength for the Pirates, as redshirt-junior return man
Jorrian Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) is second in the conference in kickoff returns, averaging 29.4 yards per return, and freshman kicker
Anthony Prevost (Chesterfield, Va.) is seventh in scoring with a perfect 2-for-2 mark in field goals and a 2-for-2 mark in PATs. He is also tied for sixth in field goals.
Redshirt-freshman punter
Christian Faber-Kinney (Williamsburg, Va.) is eighth in the MEAC in punting, as his kicks average 39.4 yards.
Senior linebacker
Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is tied for second in the MEAC in tackles, averaging 10.7 per game, while senior defensive back
Carvin Johnson (New Orleans, La.) is tied for fourth with 10.0 tackles per contest.
Sophomore defensive end
Miles Grooms (Richmond, Va.) is third in the MEAC in sacks with 2.5, and his 3.0 tackles for loss are tied for seventh-most in the conference.
The Pirates are third in the MEAC in total defense, giving up 328.3 yards per game.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Hampton and Coastal Carolina.
The Pirates are 4-5 all-time against schools currently in the Big South, with a 2-1 mark all-time against Gardner-Webb and a 2-4 record against Liberty. Hampton has never faced Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian, or Virginia Military Institute.
Hampton has seven road contests this year, and is 0-2 away from Armstrong Stadium after falling 42-9 at Western Illinois and 31-7 at William & Mary to open the 2013 season.
