EARLY ONSLAUGHT DOOMS PIRATES AT COASTAL CAROLINA

CONWAY, S.C. – The Hampton University football team fell behind early Saturday evening at Brooks Stadium, as No. 15 Coastal Carolina stormed out to a massive first-half lead and went on to grab a 50-17 win.

The Pirates fell to 0-4 on the season, matching last season's start.

Coastal Carolina (4-0) opened the game with a 10-play, 62-yard drive that ended with Lorenzo Taliaferro scoring from five yards out with 11:03 left in the first quarter. The two-point conversion failed to leave the Chanticleers with a 6-0 lead.

Alex Ross later added a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:03 left in the first quarter, but Coastal Carolina wound up with a 12-0 lead after the two-point try failed again.

Coastal Carolina broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring four times before halftime.

Ross scored from 15 yards out with 14:18 left in the half, capping off a 13-play drive to give the Chanticleers a 19-0 lead. Coastal Carolina got the ball back quickly, then completed a two-play drive with a 3-yard Taliaferro touchdown run at the 12:19 mark to give the Chanticleers a 26-0 lead.

With 4:58 left in the half, De'Angelo Henderson scored from two yards out to put Coastal Carolina up 33-0, and Ross found DeMario Bennett from six yards out as the clock expired to end the half and send Coastal Carolina into the locker room with a 40-0 lead.

The Pirates opened the second half with a lengthy drive, marching 62 yards down the field in 15 plays before freshman kicker Anthony Prevost (Chesterfield, Va.) got Hampton on the board with a 30-yard field goal at the 8:29 mark to cut Coastal Carolina's lead to 40-3.

Ryan Granger hit a 39-yard field goal with 30 seconds left in the third quarter to give Coastal Carolina a 43-3 lead.

The Pirates answered early in the fourth quarter, finding the end zone for the first time after sophomore quarterback Jaylian Williamson (Chesapeake, Va.) hit senior running back Antwon Chisholm (Belle Glade, Fla.) from six yards out with 9:51 left in the fourth quarter.

Prevost capped the six-play, 59-yard drive with the PAT to cut Coastal Carolina's lead to 43-10.

Coastal Carolina scored on the ensuing possession, though, as Zach Silverberg found the end zone from a yard out to give the Chanticleers a 50-10 lead with 5:05 to play.

The Pirates answered again on the ensuing drive, marching down the field in nine plays before sophomore quarterback Brian Swain (Laredo, Texas) rushed 10 yards for the score with 1:29 left to play, cutting Coastal Carolina's lead to 50-17.

Williamson was 13-for-24 in the air Saturday night, throwing for 135 yards and a touchdown; he has thrown at least one touchdown pass in all four of Hampton's games to open the season. Swain rushed for a team-high 61 yards and a score, averaging 7.6 yards per carry.

Chisholm was the Pirates' top receiver, catching four balls for 52 yards and a score, averaging 13.0 yards per catch.

Overall, the Pirates amassed 278 offensive yards – 156 in the air.

Senior linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) led the Pirates defense with 17 tackles, while sophomore linebacker Joshua Thorne (Oxon Hill, Md. ) had 13 tackles – including nine solo efforts.

Tyler also had Hampton's lone sack of the game.

Coastal Carolina had 511 yards of total offense, including 382 yards on the ground.
