OFFENSE STRUGGLES IN LOSS AT QUINNIPIAC

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Hampton University women's basketball team had trouble finding the bottom of the net again on Tuesday, falling 87-59 to Quinnipiac at the TD Bank Sports Center.
 
The Lady Pirates (0-2) shot 24.0 percent (18-for-75) from the floor.
 
Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the Lady Pirates with 20 points, hitting eight of 10 free throws, and senior guard Kyani White (Manassas, Va.) added 11 points. Senior guard Jackie Marshall (Hackensack, N.J.) and junior guard Blake Jenkines (Clarksville, Tenn.) each had nine points – Marshall hit three 3-pointers.
 
Redshirt junior forward Tyler Hobgood (Oxford, N.C.) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds.
 
Tate-DeFreitas also had a team-high four assists and four steals.
 
Quinnipiac scored the game's first nine points, before the Lady Pirates found the board at the 14:09 mark of the first half when a layup from White cut the lead to 9-2. The Bobcats answered with a 10-0 run to take a 19-2 lead at the 11:34 mark.
 
The Bobcats held a 28-5 lead with 7:29 left in the first half, before the Lady Pirates scored the next seven points to cut the lead to 28-12 after a fastbreak layup from Jenkines at the 5:49 mark.
 
A Tate-DeFreitas layup at the 3:18 mark cut Quinnipiac's lead to 30-16, but the Bobcats closed out the first half on a 13-7 run, going into the locker room with a 43-23 lead.
 
Quinnipiac held a 49-25 lead with 17:54 left in the contest, before the Lady Pirates started chipping away, going on an 11-1 run to cut the lead to 50-36 with 14:17 left to play after a fastbreak jumper from Tate-DeFreitas.
 
The Bobcats answered with 11 unanswered points to take a 61-36 lead with 10:56 left.
 
Quinnipiac held control through the rest of the contest, and the Bobcats led by as many as 31, going up 87-56 with 1:09 remaining after a 3-pointer from Carly Fabbri.
 
Hampton out-rebounded Quinnipiac (2-0) 53-52.
 
Jasmine Martin led five Bobcats in double figures with 15 points, and Quinnipiac shot 42.4 percent (28-for-66) from the floor.
 
The Lady Pirates will conclude their road trip on Friday, when they head to Manhattan, Kan. to take on Kansas State at 8 p.m. EST.
