LADY PIRATES FALL TO NATIONALLY-RANKED DePAUL

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Hampton University women's basketball team fell on the road to No. 25 DePaul Monday night at the McGrath-Phillips Arena, as the Blue Demons won 86-67.
 
The Lady Pirates fell to 3-8 on the season.
 
Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) turned in another 20-point effort, pouring in a game-high 22 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals to lead three Hampton players in double figures.
 
Senior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while senior guard Kyani White (Manassas, Va.) chipped in 11 points.
 
Junior guard Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) added nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
 
The Lady Pirates shot 36.1 percent (26-for-72) from the floor and hit three of 17 3-pointers (17.6 percent), as well as 12 of their 18 free throws (66.7 percent). Hampton scored 18 points off of 17 DePaul turnovers.
 
The Blue Demons opened the game on a 10-1 run, and DePaul ran the lead up to 18-5 at the 13:40 mark of the first half following a 3-pointer from Centrese McGee. Hampton responded with a 14-6 run, cutting the lead to 24-19 at the 8:07 mark after a layup from Cole.
 
Junior guard Areana Davis (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a jumper with 3:08 left in the half, cutting DePaul's lead to 29-28 and wrapping up an 11-1 Lady Pirates run.
 
DePaul answered with a 9-2 run to take a 38-30 lead with 2:18 left in the half.
 
The Blue Demons led 40-35 at the break.
 
DePaul opened the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 48-35 lead with 16:58 left to play after a layup from Jessica January. Hampton answered with a 9-3 run, cutting the lead to 51-44 at the 13:50 mark after a layup from Jordan.
 
The mid-stages of the half were a back-and-forth affair, though the Lady Pirates cut the lead to seven on two occasions – including with 9:19 left, when Tate-DeFretias sank a jumper to cut the Blue Demons' lead to 64-57.
 
DePaul then went on a 17-4 run to take an 81-61 lead with 4:14 left after a layup from Megan Podkowa.
 
That was DePaul's largest lead of the night.
 
DePaul (8-4) shot 47.2 percent (34-for-72) from the floor and hit 10 of its 25 3-pointers (40.0 percent). The Blue Demons also held a 47-43 edge on the glass.
 
Chanise Jenkins and Brittany Hrynko each had 19 points to lead four Blue Demons in double figures.
