PIRATES WIN TIGHT ONE OVER MORGAN STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team picked up its third straight win Monday night at the HU Convocation Center, picking up a 62-58 win over Morgan State to remain unbeaten in MEAC play.

The Pirates improved to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
 
Junior guard Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led the way with 17 points, thanks to three 3-pointers and a 6-for-7 effort from the free throw line. Guard Quinton Chievous (Chicago, Ill.) added 13 points and eight rebounds.
 
Junior forward Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points and three blocks. Junior guard Ke'Ron Brown (Savannah, Ga.) had a team-high four blocks and eight points.
 
The Pirates shot 41.2 percent (21-for-41) from the floor and held a 44-43 edge on the glass.
 
Donte Pretlow hit a layup with 48 seconds left to cut the Pirates' lead to 60-57, and Blake Bozeman added a free throw with two seconds left to cut the lead to 60-58. Pressley was fouled on the ensuing in-bound, sending him to the line.
 
Pressley missed both free throws, but he grabbed the rebound after the second miss, driving to the basket without being fouled to tip in a layup as the buzzer sounded.
 
Early on, the Bears (1-8, 0-2 MEAC) held an 8-3 lead, before the Pirates went on an 8-1 run to take an 11-9 lead at the 9:51 mark of the first half after a layup from redshirt sophomore guard Lawrence Cooks (Charlotte, N.C.).
 
Morgan State led for much of the half, though, taking a 24-18 lead at the 2:22 mark after a 3-pointer from Pretlow. Both teams struggled on offense in the first half, though the Bears led 28-24 after a Zech Smith layup with two seconds left.
 
But Powers heaved a shot from just beyond half-court as the buzzer sounded to send the Pirates to the locker room down just 28-27.
 
A layup from Brown with 18:36 left tied the game at 31-31, before Bozeman gave the Bears a 33-31 lead. Hampton went on to score the next six points, taking a 37-33 lead on a Cooks layup with 13:40 left to play.
 
The Bears cut the lead to 37-36 before the Pirates went on a 10-2 run to take a 47-38 lead with 8:28 left after a layup from Brown. Morgan State answered with a 12-4 run, cutting the lead to 51-50 with 4:21 left after a trey from Kyle Thomas.
 
Powers answered with a trey of his own on the next possession to give Hampton a 54-50 lead.
 
A Brown layup with 2:59 left put the Pirates up 56-52, and Powers added two free throws with 2:13 remaining to give Hampton a 58-53 lead.
 
Powers added a layup with 1:03 left to give Hampton a 60-55 lead.
 
Morgan State shot just 24.6 percent (16-for-65) from the floor.
 
Bozeman led the Bears with 15 points, while Blossom added 14 points.
