HAMPTON, Va. – A pair of cold spells doomed the Hampton University women's basketball team in its non-conference finale Monday night at the HU Convocation Center, as No. 22 Princeton emerged with a 75-63 win.
The Lady Pirates fell to 5-9 on the season.
Sophomore guard
Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) recorded her ninth 20-point effort of the season, leading the way with 23 points to go along with six rebounds and five steals. Senior guard
Kyani White (Manassas, Va.) chipped in a career-high 19 points on 6-for-12 shooting and six rebounds.
Junior guard
Ryan Jordan (Manassas, Va.) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Pirates shot 31.7 percent (20-for-63) from the floor and made seven of their 26 3-pointers (26.9 percent). Hampton was 16-for-23 (69.6 percent) from the free throw line, and the Lady Pirates turned 17 Princeton turnovers into 19 points.
Princeton led 17-15 after a back-and-forth start, thanks to a layup from Taylor Williams at the 13:14 mark of the first half, before the Lady Pirates went on an 11-2 run to take a 26-19 lead with 10:14 left in the half after a fastbreak layup from senior guard
Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.).
Tate-DeFreitas added a pair of free throws at the 8:45 mark to put Hampton up 28-21.
But Cole's layup at the 10:14 mark was Hampton's last field goal of the first half, and after Tate-DeFreitas' free throws, Princeton ended the first half on a 12-1 run, going into the break with a 33-29 lead.
Princeton shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the floor in the first half.
A 3-pointer from Annie Tarakchian gave Princeton a 38-32 lead with 16:54 left to play, before the Lady Pirates went on a 12-3 run, taking a 44-41 lead after Tate-DeFreitas drained a trey with 13:41 left to play.
The Tigers scored the next five points to take a 46-44 lead, before Tate-DeFreitas tied the game at 46-46 with a layup with 11:27 remaining.
Hampton didn't hit another field goal until redshirt junior forward
Tyler Hobgood (Oxford, N.C.) hit a layup with 5:22 left to play, cutting Princeton's lead to 61-53. Before Hobgood's basket, the Tigers had built a 61-51 lead.
Princeton went up 64-54 after Michelle Miller hit two free throws with 3:15 left, but the Lady Pirates went on an 8-2 run, cutting the lead to 66-62 with 1:40 left after a long 3-pointer from junior guard
Kristine Rose (Miramar, Fla.).
But a 3-point play from Vanessa Smith – and six free throws down the stretch – helped the Tigers pull away for the win.
Princeton (16-0) shot 45.6 percent (26-for-57) from the floor and hit six of 19 3-pointers (31.6 percent). The Tigers held a 45-37 edge in rebounds.
Smith led three Tigers in double figures with 19 points.
