TATE-DeFREITAS SETS MILESTONE IN LOSS AT OREGON

EUGENE, Ore. – Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas dropped 16 points Thursday evening in Matthew Knight Arena, setting a new milestone despite the Hampton University women's basketball team falling 86-51 to Oregon.
 
Through 68 career games, Tate-DeFreitas has 1,336 career points, ranking her 10th on the program's all-time scoring list. She is 11 points shy of ninth-place Gwen Jordan (1,347 points, 1978-82).
 
Her career average of 19.6 points per game is second-best in program history.
 
She also had a team-high six rebounds, as did sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe. Lupoe also had six points, as did freshman guard K'lynn Willis.
 
Redshirt junior guard Chanel Green had four assists.
 
The Lady Pirates (0-3) shot 32.8 percent (20-for-61) from the floor and made five of 17 3-pointers (29.4 percent). Hampton shot just 25.8 percent (8-for-31) from the floor in the first half.
 
Oregon held an early 10-5 lead after a Lexi Petersen jumper with 5:53 left in the first quarter, before the Lady Pirates went on a 6-0 run. Lupoe hit back-to-back layups to cut the Ducks' lead to one, before Tate-DeFreitas sank a layup with 3:21 left to put Hampton up 11-10.
 
But Kat Cooper ended the run with a trey, putting Oregon up 13-11 and kicking off an 8-3 Oregon run to end the quarter.
 
After the first 10 minutes, Oregon led 18-14.
 
That momentum continued into the second quarter, a 10-minute period in which the Ducks outscored Hampton 20-4. Oregon (2-0) scored the first six points of the quarter, going up 24-14 before the Lady Pirates hit their first field goal of the quarter, a Tate-DeFreitas layup at the 6:05 mark.
 
Hampton had just two field goals in the quarter, and Oregon led 38-18 at the half.
 
The Lady Pirates shot 40.0 percent (12-for-30) from the floor in the second half, while forcing the Ducks into 10 turnovers. But Oregon kept the margin throughout the third quarter, leading by as many as 31 (61-30) after a pair of Lexi Bando free throws at the 1:20 mark.
 
A 3-pointer from Willis with 7:13 left in the fourth quarter cut Oregon's lead to 68-41. Sophomore forward Mikayla Sayle again cut the lead to 27 (70-43) with a layup with 6:08 to play.
 
But the Ducks went on a 14-2 run to take an 84-45 lead with 2:10 to play.
 
The Lady Pirates ended the game with a 6-2 spurt, cutting the lead to its final margin after a fastbreak layup from Green with 18 seconds remaining.
 
Oregon shot 50.0 percent (32-for-64) from the floor and made nine of 25 3-pointers (36.0 percent). The Ducks shot 48.4 percent (15-for-31) in the first half and 51.5 percent (17-for-33) in the second half.
 
Cooper led four Ducks in double figures with 16 points.
