BOULDER, Colo. – Brian Darden and
Quinton Chievous each scored in double figures Saturday night at the Coors Events Center, but the Hampton University men's basketball team struggled in a 96-53 loss to Colorado.
The Pirates fell to 4-5 on the season.
Darden led the Pirates with 16 points, going 6-for-12 from the floor and hitting two of his six 3-pointers. Chievous added 15 points on 6-for-14 shooting.
Reginald Johnson, Jr., despite scoring just eight points, led Hampton with five rebounds.
Branden Aughburns blocked three shots.
The Pirates shot 32.3 percent (21-for-65) from the floor and made two of 14 3-pointers. Hampton also struggled at the free throw line, going 9-for-22 (40.9 percent).
Hampton held an early 4-3 lead after Johnson sank a fastbreak layup at the 16:50 mark of the first half, before Colorado went on a 10-2 run to take a 13-6 lead with 13:42 left in the half. Darden cut the lead to 15-11 with a trey at the 13:07 mark, before the Buffaloes answered with an 8-1 run to go up 23-12 after Josh Scott converted a 3-point play.
Colorado led by double digits the rest of the way, taking a 42-25 lead into the half.
Darden had nine points at the break.
A free throw from Chievous with 17:10 left in the second half cut the Buffaloes' lead to 51-32, before Colorado went on an 11-2 run to open up a 62-34 lead after Tory Miller hit a jumper at the 13:46 mark of the second half.
In all, the Buffaloes scored 53 points in the second half, and their largest lead came with 2:10 to play when they went up 95-49.
Gregory Hayden scored the last four points of the game.
Colorado (10-1) shot 47.7 percent (31-for-65) from the floor – including a 56.7 percent clip (17-for-30) in the second half. The Buffaloes hit nine of their 24 3-pointers and 24 of their 32 free throws.
The Buffaloes also held a 52-37 edge on the glass.
Scott led four Buffaloes in double figures with 21 points, while Miller added 19 points and 10 rebounds.
