HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team split a doubleheader with Liberty on Tuesday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, winning the second game 2-1 after falling 6-2 in the first game.
The Lady Pirates are 6-16 on the season.
Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning in the second game, before Hampton responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Sophomore
Danielle Budden (Jackson, N.J.) scored the first run on a fielder's choice by freshman
Lorena Alvarez (Saddle Brook, N.J.), before freshman
Allyson Babinsack (Hampton, Va.) walked with the bases loaded to bring in senior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.).
Liberty had nine hits in the second game, but only managed the one run.
Babinsack picked up her fourth career win, striking out a season-best eight and walking just one.
Liberty led 1-0 after an inning and a half in the first game, before Hampton tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Wilkins.
The Flames responded with three runs in the top of the third, before tacking on another run in the fourth and yet another in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. A double from freshman
Jada Fields (Woodland Park, N.J.) doubled to left center field to bring in junior
McKalee Rouse (Aledo, Texas).
Senior
Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) had two hits.
