PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team dropped its series finale against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday at Hawk Field, as UMES won 4-3 on a walkoff.
The Lady Pirates (15-20, 7-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time in a month.
Hampton got on the board in the top of the second inning; after freshman
Jada Fields (Woodland Patk, N.J.) doubled to left center, junior
Jessica Reiman (Massillon, Ohio) hit a two-run home run to left field, her first of the season, to put the Lady Pirates up 2-0.
But UMES answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead on a bases-clearing double from Samantha Casarez.
Freshman
Allyson Babinsack (Hampton, Va.) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with a double to left center field that brought home junior
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.).
UMES opened the bottom of the seventh inning with three straight singles to load the bases, before Morgan King singled to left center field to bring in Ciara Schnyder to give the Lady Hawks the 4-3 win and the series.
Babinsack had two of Hampton's six hits;
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) singled in the first inning for her 232nd career hit, giving her the program's all-time career hits record.
Babinsack's streak of nine straight winning decisions was snapped, despite five strikeouts.
The Lady Pirates will be in Lynchburg, Va. on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Liberty at 4 p.m. Both games will be shown live on ESPN3. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
