HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team completed its series sweep of Coppin State with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, winning the first game 8-0 before taking the second game 9-0.
Both games were over in five innings.
The Lady Pirates (18-22, 10-4 MEAC) wasted no time, scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning in the first game. Junior
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) got the scoring started with a two-run double to right field, giving Hampton a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning, after a walk to freshman
Allyson Babinsack (Hampton, Va.), freshman
Jada Fields (Woodland Park, N.J.) hit her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot to center field, to give the Lady Pirates a 5-0 lead.
McCoy added a sacrifice fly in the second inning to put Hampton up 6-0, before adding a two-run homer to left center field, her first of the season, in the fourth inning to push the game to its final margin.
McCoy drove in five runs in the first game, and she was one of four Hampton players to record two hits.
Babinsack pitched four innings to pick up her 14th win of the season, striking out three and scattering three hits.
Another sacrifice fly from McCoy kicked off the scoring in the first inning of the second game, scoring
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) to give the Lady Pirates a 1-0 lead.
The other eight runs came in the fourth inning.
Junior
Jessica Reiman (Massillon, Ohio) got the scoring started in that frame with a two-run homer to center field, giving Hampton a 3-0 lead before McCoy doubled to right center field, scoring junior
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) and sophomore
Danielle Budden (Jackson, N.J.).
Fields followed with an RBI single to put Hampton up 6-0, before Reiman walked with the bases loaded to make it a 7-0 game. An infield single from Budden gave the Lady Pirates an 8-0 lead, before another bases-loaded walk – this one to sophomore
Taylor Clark (Queen Creek, Ariz.) – ended the scoring.
Reiman and McCoy each drove in three runs in the second game.
Senior
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) struck out eight in five innings of work in the second game, only giving up two hits and picking up her fourth win of the season.
The Lady Pirates will be home for the final time this season on Friday and Saturday to take on rival Norfolk State. Friday's game will be televised live on ESPNU at 3 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
