LADY PIRATES WRAP UP ROAD SWING WITH LOSS AT PRINCETON

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Hampton University women's basketball team's four-game, one-week road trip ended on Sunday afternoon with a 79-55 loss to Princeton in the Jadwin Gymnasium.
 
After their non-conference finale, the Lady Pirates are 3-11 on the season.
 
Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas led all scorers with 20 points, despite 8-for-26 shooting, while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out two assists. Senior guard Ryan Jordan added 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard Dejane' James added a season-high eight points off the bench.
 
Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Pirates shot 30.4 percent (21-for-69) from the floor and made five of their 19 3-pointers (26.3 percent). Hampton also went 8-for-12 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.
 
Hampton had an 8-0 edge in fastbreak points.
 
Princeton opened the game on a 10-2 run, before the Lady Pirates cut the deficit to 10-6 on a jumper from junior guard Chanel Green and Jordan. But the Tigers took an 18-6 lead after a layup from Alex Wheatley, and later led 20-8 after a Vanessa Smith layup.

The Tigers led 24-13 after the first quarter.
 
A Michelle Miller jumper with 7:59 left in the second quarter gave Princeton a 31-16 lead, the Tigers' largest lead of the half. Tia Weledji hit a jumper at the 3:48 mark to put the Tigers on top 37-22, before the Lady Pirates scored the next six points, cutting the lead to 37-28 after a pair of Tate-DeFreitas free throws.
 
Princeton led 40-30 at the half. Tate-DeFreitas had 11 points at the break.
 
Hampton responded in the third quarter, using much of the frame to go on a 13-5 run, cutting Princeton's lead to 50-43 with 1:42 left in the frame following a layup from junior forward Shaleise Boyd. But Taylor Williams hit three of four free throws to end the run and send Princeton into the fourth quarter with a 53-43 lead.
 
The Tigers blew the game open in the final frame, at one point leading 63-45 after a Miller trey. Hampton cut that lead to 63-48 after a Tate-DeFreitas layup with 5:45 left to play, but Princeton scored the next seven points to go up 70-48.
 
A layup from Taylor Brown with two seconds left pushed the game to its final margin.
 
Princeton (11-3) shot 42.9 percent (27-for-63) from the floor and hit seven of its 14 3-pointers. The Tigers also hit 18 of 21 free throws (85.7 percent) and held a 53-33 advantage in rebounds.
 
Miller led four Tigers in double figures with 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
