PIRATES STAGE COMEBACK, BEAT MORGAN STATE IN OT

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Two MEAC games so far this season, two times the Pirates have gone to overtime.

The Hampton University men's basketball team trailed for much of the game Wednesday night at Talmadge Hill Field House, but a late run forced overtime before the Pirates escaped with an 83-80 win over Morgan State.

The Pirates (6-7, 2-0 MEAC) have now won four straight over the Bears.

Quinton Chievous led four Pirates in double figures after turning in a monster game, racking up a game-high 28 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. He went 11-for-19 from the floor and made two of his three 3-pointers.

Chievous, who also had three assists and three steals, grabbed eight boards on the offensive end. He has four double-doubles this season and seven in his last 14 games.

Brian Darden dropped 23 points after hitting five 3-pointers and going 8-for-11 from the free throw line, while Kalin Fisher added a season-high 14 points.

Reginald Johnson, Jr. added 13 points and four assists.

The Pirates shot 39.1 percent (27-for-69) from the floor for the contest, hitting 11 of their 25 3-pointers (44.0 percent) in the process. Hampton also held a decisive 57-40 edge on the glass.

Donte Pretlow hit a trey with 2:45 remaining in regulation that gave the Bears a 78-71 lead. But that was the final field goal of the second half for Morgan State, and when Fisher hit a three with 2:26 left, it triggered a 7-0 run for the Pirates.

Fisher then sank a fastbreak layup, cutting the Bears' lead to two, before Chievous hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds remaining to tie the game at 78-78.

Andre Horne had a look from three at the end of regulation, but the shot went begging.

Points were at a premium in the overtime session. The two teams combined for just one field goal – a fastbreak layup from Chievous with 2:01 left in the frame that put Hampton up 81-79 – and Morgan State went 0-for-5 from the floor in overtime.

A free throw from Cedric Blossom cut Hampton's lead to 81-80, but Darden and Johnson each hit a free throw in the closing seconds to push the game to its final margin.

The Pirates led by as many as seven early in the first half, as a trey from Johnson gave Hampton a 13-6 lead at the 16:32 mark. But the Bears clawed their way back, using a 13-5 run to take a 19-18 lead with 11:16 left in the half.

Fisher ended the run with a jumper that put Hampton up 20-19, but Morgan State proceeded to outscore the Pirates 24-13 to take a 43-33 lead with 1:17 left in the half following a pair of free throws from Tyler Streeter.

A Chievous layup cut that lead to 43-35 at the half.

Darden led the Pirates with 14 points at the break, while Chievous had 12.

Morgan State controlled most of the second half, holding a 61-48 lead at the 12:13 mark after a layup from Resean Simpson. But the Pirates methodically cut into that deficit, scoring 23 of the next 37 points – cutting the lead to 75-71 with 3:18 left in regulation after a Chievous layup.

Morgan State (2-12, 0-1 MEAC) shot 42.2 percent (27-for-64) from the floor, but hit just four of 15 3-pointers (26.7 percent).

Pretlow led four Bears in double figures with 20 points.

The Pirates will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday to take on Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m. For more information on Hampton University basketball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
