THIRD SET COMEBACK LIFTS VOLLEYBALL TO SWEEP OF COPPIN STATE

HAMPTON, VA. – A wild third-set comeback by Hampton University on Sunday afternoon lifted the Lady Pirates to a sweep of Coppin State in a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Northern Division volleyball matchup 25-17, 25-21, 27-25 at Holland Hall.

In the frantic third set that saw 10 ties and three lead changes, Coppin State (2-21, 2-7) jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before Hampton (5-15, 4-5) used consecutive attack errors from the Eagles to tie the match at 10-all.   The lead stayed in the two-point range for the middle part of the set as a Kyndall Nicholas kill tied the match at 20-all.

Coppin State scored four of the next five points to take a 24-21 lead on a Dominique Madarang service ace.  Hampton used three straight kills by Lena Washington, Micah Leavell and Ravyn Richardson to tie the match at 24-all.  After a trade of points, Hampton set up Leavell for her 15th kill of the match to take a 26-25 lead.  A block from Ravyn Richardson and Leavell gave Hampton the 27-25 third set comeback and sweep.

The Lady Pirates opened the match jumping out to a 10-5 lead off an attack error by the Eagles and held its advantage throughout the first set using a Leavell kill to win 25-17.   In the second set, Hampton held the lead throughout and ended the set with a Richardson kill to win 25-21.

Leavell had a stellar afternoon with 15 kills, one error on 29 attacks for a strong .483 attack percentage.   Washington was right with her also nailing 15 kills with five errors on 24 attacks for a .417 attack percentage.  As a team, Hampton hit a season-best .317 attack percentage.  Washington added five digs and four block assists, while Leavell had six digs and two block assists.  Kyndall Nicholas had nine kills and a .538 attack percentage with seven block assists.

Hampton will now hit the road for three games to end its regular season starting October 30 when they take on Howard in Washington, DC at 3 pm.
