DOVER, De. – Hampton University pulled a key sweep on Friday night taking a 3-0 win over Delaware State to keep their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament hopes alive with a 25-23, 25-9, 25-19 win.
The Lady Pirates opened the match scoring seven of the first ten points and never trailed in the opening set. Delaware State cut the margin to 21-20, but Hampton scored the next two points and held on for the 25-23 first set win.
In the second set, Hampton jumped on Delaware State quickly racing out to an 9-1 lead behind a service ace from
Summer Humes. The advantage grew to 17-4 behind a kill from
Ravyn Richardson as the Lady Pirates won 25-9.
Lena Washington's kill early in the third set put Hampton up 10-3 as Hampton kept Delaware State at arms length to win 25-19 and sweep the match 3-0.
Micah Leavell and Washington recorded double-doubles with Leavell having 14 kills and 10 digs, while Washington added 11 kills and 13 digs. Leavell only had one error in 20 total attacks for a smashing .650 hitting percentage on the night. Hampton as a team only had nine errors in 79 attacks with 46 kills for a .468 hitting night. Richardson also had a strong night with six kills, no errors on 10 attacks for a stellar .600 hitting percentage.
Hampton (6-16, 5-6) travels across the tunnel to take on Norfolk State in a 3pm match Sunday. A Hampton win will clinch a bid to the MEAC Tournament Nov. 18-20 at Princess Anne, Md.Â
