HAMPTON, Va. – Dionte Adams converted a 3-point play with four seconds left in regulation Saturday night at the Convocation Center, lifting the Hampton University men's basketball team over rival Howard 68-67.
The Pirates (17-9, 12-2 MEAC) have won four straight games.
Reginald Johnson, Jr. led three Pirates in double figures with 18 points – 14 of which came after the half – and six assists, while
Lawrence Cooks added 14 points (11 in the second half) and
Dionte Adams chipped in 12.
Quinton Chievous grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Pirates shot 40.0 percent (24-for-60) from the floor – including a 58.6 percent clip (17-for-29) in the second half. Hampton made six of its 19 3-pointers (31.6 percent) and went 14-for-20 (70.0 percent) from the free throw line.
Hampton out-rebounded Howard 40-36.
Cooks hit two free throws with 2:21 left in regulation to give the Pirates a 65-62 lead, before James Daniel III tied the game at 65-65 with a 3-point play after a Hampton turnover with 57 seconds remaining. Another Hampton turnover led to a Daniel jumper that put Howard up 67-65 with 16 seconds left.
Hampton called timeout with 10 seconds left, drawing up a play that eventually saw Johnson find a cutting Adams beneath the basket. Adams banked the shot off the glass, drew the foul on Marcel Boyd, and hit the free throw.
Hampton led 68-67 with four seconds left.
Daniel's half-court heave at the buzzer missed, giving the Pirates their 13th straight win over Howard.
The Bison controlled much of the first half, using Daniel's 19 points in the frame to take a 36-23 lead into the half. At one point in the first half, Daniel hit back-to-back-to-back threes, giving Howard a 23-11 lead at the 12:30 mark.
Keon Hill hit a layup with 1:34 left in the half that gave the Bison their intermission lead.
Kalin Fisher was Hampton's leading scorer at the half with seven points.
Boyd opened the second half with a jumper that gave the Bison a 38-23 lead, but the Pirates scored the next 14 points to cut the lead to 38-37 after a Johnson three with 13:52 left to play. Ultimately, Hampton opened the second half with a 20-4 run, taking a 43-40 lead after a Chievous free throw with 11:49 left.
Howard took a 46-45 lead on a Hill jumper with 9:49 left, before a 7-0 Hampton spurt put the Pirates up 53-46 following a putback from Adams at the 7:34 mark.
Another Adams layup with 3:21 left to play put Hampton up 63-56. Howard then scored the next six points, cutting the lead to 63-62 on a Daniels trey with 2:34 left.
Howard (11-18, 5-9 MEAC) shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the floor and hit eight of 19 3-pointers (42.1 percent). The Bison went 9-for-15 (60.0 percent) from the free throw line.
Daniel, the nation's leading scorer, led Howard with 35 points.
