HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team lost both of its games on Sunday to wrap up the Hampton Invitational at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, falling 10-7 to Manhattan and then losing 10-5 to Drexel.
The Lady Pirates are 4-7 on the season.
Manhattan led the first game 1-0 after half an inning, before the Lady Pirates responded in the bottom of the frame by scoring six runs. Senior
Taylor McCoy doubled home a run to get the scoring started, before sophomore
Jada Fields walked with the bases loaded to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead.
Freshman
Hope Sobelewski then singled in another run, before freshman
Daniella Milloy doubled to right center field with the bases loaded, bringing in all three runs to give Hampton a 6-1 lead.
The Jaspers scored another run in the second inning to cut the gap to 6-2, before adding five runs in the top of the fourth inning – including a three-run home run from Lauren Pitney – to take a 7-6 lead.
Another two runs in the fifth gave the Jaspers a 9-6 lead.
Milloy added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 9-7, but Manhattan scored again in the top of the seventh to take a 10-7 lead.
Sobelewski led the Lady Pirates with three hits, while Milloy and McCoy each had two hits. Milloy led Hampton with four RBIs.
Drexel took early control of the second game, scoring four runs in the top of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Hampton answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, beginning when Fields scored on an illegal pitch.
Milloy followed with a double down the right field line that scored junior
Danielle Budden, before freshman
Ashley Grassini singled home Milloy to cut the lead to 4-3.
But the Dragons added a run in the third and two runs in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.
The Lady Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, before Fields singled up the middle to score Sobelewski and senior
Diamond Ponds, cutting Drexel's lead to 7-5.
But the Dragons added three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 10-5 lead.
Fields, Budden, and Grassini each had two hits in the second game, with Fields driving in a team-high two runs.
In three innings of relief work,
Allie Hotetz struck out two batters.
