BALTIMORE, Md. – Another offensive explosion allowed the Hampton University softball team to complete a three-game sweep of Coppin State on Sunday, as the Lady Pirates won 14-2 in five innings at the CSU Softball Complex.
The Lady Pirates (18-24, 10-5 MEAC) have won each of their last six games.
Hampton struck first in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead after senior
Taylor McCoy doubled home freshman
Hope Sobelewski, who had reached on an error.
The Lady Pirates then pushed across five runs in the top of the third, starting when senior
Diamond Ponds led off the inning with a walk. Junior
Danielle Budden followed with a double to put runners on second and third, before Sobelewski doubled them both home to give Hampton a 3-0 lead.
McCoy and sophomore
Jada Fields followed with back-to-back singles, with Fields' hit bringing home Sobelewski and giving the Lady Pirates a 4-0 lead.
Freshman
Kial Watts then scored two with a single to put Hampton up 6-0.
The fourth inning saw the Lady Pirates push across eight more runs, starting with an RBI double from Sobelewski that brought home Ponds – who had led off the inning with a single. McCoy followed with a two-run single, giving Hampton a 9-0 lead.
Freshman
Sarah Kollas then hit a three-run home run to left field, her first of the season, putting the Lady Pirates up 12-0.
Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Budden singled home a run to give the Lady Pirates a 13-0 lead. Then, with the bases still loaded, junior
Taylor Clark walked to bring home sophomore
Lorena Alvarez to give the Lady Pirates a 14-0 lead.
The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the fifth.
Budden and McCoy both went 3-for-4 at the plate, while McCoy, Kollas, and Sobelewski each drove in three runs. Sobelewski also scored three times.
Freshman
Allie Hotetz struck out four in five innings to pick up her 10th win of the season.
