DOVER, De. – After a slow start, Hampton erupted on a 26-4 second quarter romp to score an easy 83-52 win over Delaware State in their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road game of the season Saturday.
Neither team could score in the first three minutes of the game as a
Chanel Green layup broke the drought with 6:35 left in the first. Delaware State (1-15, 0-3) worked into the contest with a Mikah Aldridge free throw with 1:37 left to trail 15-13. A 3-pointer from
Monnazjea Finney-Smith 20 seconds later put Hampton ahead 18-13 to close the quarter.
In the second, Hampton's defense went wild holding the Hornets scoreless for almost the first five minutes of the quarter as the Lady Pirates scored the first 12 points of the quarter with
Malia Tate-DeFreitas layup putting them up 30-13 with 5:12 left in the half.
Delaware State broke the drought scoring buckets by Ivana Negron with 5:03 left and by Gennell Addison brought the Hornets to 30-17 with 4:23 left. That turned into the last points of the quarter for the Hornets as Hampton (9-7, 3-0) scored the next 14 points of the quarter finished by a DeJane' James layup putting Hampton up 44-17 at the half. The lead grew to as much as 33 points with under a minute to go as Hampton cruised to the win.
Four players scored in double figures to lead Hampton on Saturday with sophomore
K'lynn Willis leading the way with 16 points and four steals. Finney-Smith had 14 points and six rebounds, while Tate-DeFreitas added 13 and six rebounds. Freshman
Ashley Bates had season highs of 13 points and three steals in 12 minutes.
As a team, the Lady Pirates had 26 steals to force 41 Delaware State turnovers and converted those into 35 points. The 26 steals and 41 turnovers are the most in a game under head coach
David Six.
Chanel Green topped the team with a career-best six steals and
Georgianna Gilbeaux swiped a career-best five steals.
On the boards, Hampton outrebounded Delaware State 41-40 with Gilbeaux leading hauling in a career-high seven. The 83 points are a season high for the Lady Pirates.
Hampton will return home to face North Carolina Central in a 4pm tip on Monday, Jan. 16.
