NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton University men's tennis players Luke Thompson and Matthew Foster-Estwick earned a third and fourth place finish in singles over the weekend as the Pirates competed in the inaugural Monarch Invitational at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

Thompson took third in the Silver Singles winning three straight consolation round matches to take third.  After losing his opening match, Thompson scored wins over Tristan Bautil of William & Mary 6=4, 6-3, Scott Fenne of Charlotte 6-4, 6-4 and then knocked off the fourth-seed Tate Steinour of James Madison 8-7 for third place.

Foster-Estwick went 2-2 in the Blue Singles to finish fourth.  After losing his opening match, he defeated Collin Thomson of Charlotte 6-3, 6-2 and Matthew Fernandez of Richmond 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) to make the consolation final.  In that match he lost to George Lovitt of Richmond 6-3, 6-3.

Other singles highlights for Hampton on the weekend included Charlie Hudson who split a pair of three-set matches in singles falling to the eventual runnerup Michael Chen of William & Mary.  He went 1-1 in the backdraw knocking off Joseph Nardini of Richmond 7-5, 6-3 before losing to the third-seed Brice Polunder of Richmond 8-1.

In doubles, the tandem of Fernando Fernandes and Hudson scored an 8-5 win in their first round match before losing to the second-seeded team from William & Mary 8-1.

The men will next compete in the ITA Regionals October 19-23 in Lynchburg.
