BALTIMORE, Md. -- A blistering 23-3 run over a four minute span of the second half helped propel Hampton to a 71-58 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over Morgan State on Saturday afternoon.
The win by Hampton (15-12, 9-5) helped snap a three-game losing skid by the Lady Pirates and also stopped a five-game winning streak by Morgan State (7-20, 5-9).
A pair of Braennan Farrar free throws with 8:52 left in the third gave Morgan State its largest lead of the day at 36-24. Hampton turned up the pressure defensively and scored 12 straight points as a
Kaylah Lupoe layup evened the game at 38-all with 6:47 left in the third.
Hampton continued its pressure attack forcing eight turnovers and an 0-for-7 run for the Bears as a
Jephany Brown layup with 6:07 left in the third gave Hampton a 43-36 lead. In the fourth quarter, Hampton used an 11-1 run to give themselves a 14-point advantage on a
Georgianna Gilbeaux jumper to lead 62-48.
A back-and-forth first period saw five ties and six lead changes. Jihayah Chavis hit a layup with 3:11 left to put the Bears up 12-8, but Hampton scored the next five points as a 3-point play by DeJane' James gave Hampton a 13-12 lead with 2:23 left.
Kaylah Lupoe hit a layup for the fifth tie of the quarter at 15-all though that was snapped as Zuri White drained a jumper to give Morgan State a 17-15 lead after one.
In the second quarter, a
Mikayla Sayle layup with 6:24 left evened the game for the seventh time on the day at 21-all. Hampton was outscored 9-1 to close the half as Jayde Duncan hit a layup to give the hosts a 30-22 halftime advantage.
Hampton ended the game hittinga season-best 51.7% from the floor going 31-of-60. In the second half they were a blistering 21-of-33 (63.6%) from the field. Lupoe was the leading scorer with 17 points and eight rebounds, while
Monnazjea Finney-Smith had 14 points and six boards and K'Lynn Willis added 12 points, three assists and three steals.
The Lady Pirates will celebrate Senior Night on Monday night with the Battle of the Bay hosting Norfolk State in a big MEAC matchup starting at 6 pm in the HU Convocation Center.
