SOFTBALL PICKS UP A WIN IN CAROLINA CLASSIC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Hampton University softball team picked up a win in four games this past weekend at the 2017 Carolina Classic, going 1-3 over the course of Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Anderson Stadium.

The Lady Pirates are 2-10 on the season.

Hampton defeated Miami (Ohio) 7-5 on Saturday, thanks to 11 hits and taking advantage of two Miami errors. Miami scored first, pushing across two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead over the Lady Pirates.

But Hampton scored four times in the fourth, starting with a solo home run from Jada Fields, who was named to the All-Tournament Team. Quierra Bradford gave the Lady Pirates a 3-2 lead with a two-run double later in the inning, then she scored on a single down the left field line to give Hampton a 4-2 edge.

A bases-loaded walk to Taylor Warrick and a single from Wise MacKenzie in the fifth gave the Lady Pirates a 6-2 lead, before Ashley Grassini cranked a home run to center in the seventh to put Hampton up 7-2.

Miami got a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 7-5.

Field led the Lady Pirates with three hits, and Bradford had a team-high two RBIs.

Hampton opened play on Friday with a 17-2 loss to Towson, before falling 7-6 to Marshall. Kial Watts hit her first home run of the season in the Towson game, a solo shot in the first inning, and Field added an RBI double in the fourth.

Marshall scored the first run in Friday's second game in the top of the first, but the Lady Pirates took the lead back in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer from Morgan Crawford. Marshall then scored three times in the third and twice in the fourth to go up 6-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Alvarez and Brianna Armstrong each singled home a pair of runs to tie the game at 6-6.

But Marshall scored the game-winning run in the sixth.

Anderson had two hits in the Marshall game to lead Hampton, and her two RBIs were also most on the team.

On Sunday, the Lady Pirates fell 8-2 to the host Tar Heels.

Both of Hampton's runs came in the fourth inning; Crawford doubled home Fields, before advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a throwing error. Those two runs cut UNC's lead to 4-2, before the Tar Heels scored four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Lady Pirates were held to three hits.

Hampton will be in Durham, N.C. on Monday, March 6 for a doubleheader against North Carolina Central. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5757, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
