HAMPTON, Va. – A 25-5 run to open the second half propelled the Hampton Pirates to a 78-56 win over Delaware State on Friday night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup at the HU Convocation Center.
After holding a 39-28 halftime lead, Hampton (6-11, 1-1) scored the first seven points of the second half as a
Jermaine Marrow layup put them up 46-28 with 18:11 left. Following a Joe Lewis jumper for DSU, the Pirates put the game in overdrive racing out to a 64-31 lead with 11:40 left on a 3-pointer from
Greg Heckstall.
Hampton forced Delaware State into a 9-for-33 performance from the floor in the second half (27.3%), while they blistered the nets hitting 51.7% from the floor (15-of-29).
Heckstall and
Malique Trent-Street were the leading scorers for Hampton with 17 points apiece. Trent-Street added five rebounds, five assists and six steals, while Heckstall added seven boards, three assists and was 5-of-6 from 3-point land.
Joining them in double figures were
Kalin Fisher with 12 points and
Trevond Barnes with 10 points and four blocked shots.
Hampton is now off until January 20 when they face Savannah State in Savannah, Ga. at 6 pm.
