PIRATES RALLY FOR 24-23 WIN AT PRESBYTERIAN

LOCATION: Clinton, SC
IN BRIEF: Hampton scored 17 straight points in the second half and held off a late run by Presbyterian in a 24-23 win on Saturday in Clinton, S.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Presbyterian took the opening drive and went 66 yards over 13 plays as Hampton's defense stiffened inside the five to force a 20-yard Gardner Duckworth field goal which put the Blue Hose up 3-0 with 6:35 left in the first.
  • Hampton responded with an 11-play, 62-yard drive as Delmon Williams connected with Byron Barnet on an 11-yard scoring pass to lead 7-3 at the 3:45 mark of the first.
  • John Walker found Dohnte Meyers on a 50-yard scoring pass with 2:51 left in the opening quarter as the hosts took a 10-7 advantage.
  • Walker struck again on a 35-yard scoring strike to Keith Pearsoni with 5:21 left in the half to push the advantage to 17-7.
  • Hampton opened the third quarter with a 12 play, 79-yard drive taking 3:58 off the clock.  Williams converted on a fourth down and goal from the one scampering in untouched as the Pirates trimmed the margin to 17-14 with 11:02 left in the third.
  • After forcing a Presbyterian punt, Hampton had two breaks on its next possession.  A punt was nullified by a Presbyterian roughing the punter for an automatic first down.  The next punt Presbyterian fumbled which was recovered by Jayso'n Davidson at the Blue Hose 28.
  • The ensuing Hampton drive stalled on the Blue Hose nine as Evan Lomax connected on a 25-yard field goal as Hampton tied it 17-all with 3:19 left in the third.
  • Will Robinson capped an eight-play, 53-yard drive with an 11-yard scoring run right through the middle of the line.  Evan Lomax's extra-point put Hampton up 24-17 with 10:48 left in the game.
  • Presbyterian scored on a 18-play, 75-yard drive that took 8:34 as Walker scampered in on a five-yard run with 2:08 left.  The extra point attempt by Duckworth was wide left as Hampton held a 24-23 lead.
 
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
  • Walker started the game blistering hot connecting on his first 13 passes.  He hit his first pass of the third quarter before missing on his 15th attempt.
  • Presbyterian two touchdown drives in the first half were quickies of three and two plays.
  • Will Robinson ran for a career high 154 yards…Had 116 through three quarters as his previous best was last week with 98 against Lane.
  • Hampton forced a Blue Hose turnover with 13:38 left as Robert Scott snared a Walker pass on the Hampton 37.  That was the first interception of the year for Tank.
  • Presbyterian's first first down of the second half with nine minutes left in the game.
  • Hampton ran 79 plays to Presbyterian's 60 and outgained the Blue  Hose 367-315.
  • Williams was 17-of-33 with one interception for 105 yards and one touchdown
  • Tyler Frazier topped the team with eight tackles.
  • Hampton ran for a season-high 262 yards topping the 251 of last week against Lane.
  • Defensively, Hampton held Presbyterian to 64 yards rushing
  • First game for Hampton this year that was under double digits as the previous five had at least a 28-point differential.

Hampton is off until October 27 for Homecoming when they host Virginia University of Lynchburg at 2 pm.
