RECORDS: Hampton 6-3; MVSU 1-8
LOCATION: Rice-Totten Stadium, Itta Bena, MS
IN BRIEF: Hampton extended its winning streak to five in a row with a wild 54-39 win over Mississippi Valley State on a cold Saturday on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • If you were late arriving, you missed early scores.   MVSU scored on its third play of the game as Jeff Even connected with Booker Chambers on a 71-yard scoring pass down the middle of the field as the Delta Devils took a 7-0 lead just 65 seconds into the game.
  • Hampton took its first possession and scored on its second play as Delmon Williams connected with Marcel Paul on a 65-yard strike to even the game at 7-all with 13:17 left in the opening quarter.
  • The Pirates struck again in the first as Raeshad Herriott finished a 60-yard, five-play drive with a 15-yard run.  Will Robinson set him up with a 31-yard scamper on the play before to get the Pirates down to the 15-yardline.
  • Another quick scoring drive for Hampton put them up 21-7 as Williams connected with Byron Barney on a 19-yard scoring pass.  That drive was boosted by a 41-yard burst by Herriott to put the Pirates on the MVSU 20.  Two plays later Hampton held a 21-7 lead with 5:52 left in the first.
  • The Pirates defense got the next scoring drive started as Devin Thurmond recovered a fumble on the MVSU 11.  Two plays later Robinson scored on a three-yard plunge to take a 28-7 lead with 4:26 left.
  • To open the second quarter, Hampton was forced to punt for the first time in the game and the snap sailed over Ivan Oraha's head and was recovered on the Hampton one.  On third down, Even snuck around the left side for a touchdown to trim the margin to 28-14 with 13:18 left in the half.
  • A Ruben Piraquive 38-yard field goal finished a 38-yard, nine-play drive as the hosts climbed to 28-17 with 6:56 left in the half.
  • The defense for Hampton struck again as Kapri Doucet recovered a fumbe on the MVSU 10 and the next play saw Antonio Graham push it in on a 10-yard sweep to lead 34-17 with 5:04 remaining.
  • The tandem of Even and Chambers connected again on a 16-yard scoring pass to cap a four play, 44-yard drive in 79 seconds to make the score 34-24 at the 3:42 mark.
  • As was the case for most of the first half, Hampton answered that score with one of its own as Williams found Lorenzo Thompson on a nine-yard connection to take a 40-24 lead with 24 seconds left in the half.
  • Williams got Hampton on the board on their first possession of the third quarter finding Paul on an eight-yard connection to take a 48-24 lead almost four minutes into the quarter.
  • Chambers got on the board again for the hosts returning a punt 85 yards as the Delta Devils trailed 48-31.
  • Doucet got his second fumble recovery on the day to set up a quick 38-yard strike from Williams to Barney for a 54-31 Hampton lead at the 4:49 mark.
  • The hosts closed the scoring with Chris Fowler finding Darrion Harper on a 30-yard pass with 6:51 left for the eventual final of 54-39.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
  • The 54 points is tied for the second most against a NCAA FCS opponent in school history.
  • Williams was one touchdown away from tying the school single-game touchdown mark of six.  He was 17-of-23 for 231 yards to go with those five touchdowns.
  • With his five touchdown passes Saturday, he is now tied for third on the single-season list with 20
  • Raeshad Herriott ran for a season high 135 yards and one touchdown
  • William Robinson continued his strong season to date with 122 yards and a touchdown
  • Barney continued his run of multi-touchdown games with his two touchdown receptions.  He did that last week at SUNY Maritime and now has nine touchdowns on the year.
