IN BRIEF: Another second half flurry fell short as Hampton dropped an 80-66 decision to California on Tuesday night in the GotPrint.com Legends Classic presented by Trapper.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cal jumped out to a 19-10 lead early but Hampton scored seven straight as a Jermaine Marrow layup brought the Pirates to 19-17 with 12:10 left.
- The Golden Bears then went on a 16-3 run to take a 35-20 lead on a Justice Sueing layup with 7:14 left in the half.
- In the second half the lead grew to 19 points early with an Andre Kelley layup putting the hosts up 53-34 with 18:42 left.Â
- Hampton went on a 19-5 run in the second half to cut the lead to five on an Akim Mitchell layup with 13:17 left. The Pirates were as close as six points with 9:14 left on another Mitchell layup but that was as close as they could get.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Jermaine Marrow was the leading scorer with 26 points going 9-of-24 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line. He also had three assists and five rebounds.
- Kalin Fisher and Akim Mitchell each added 12 points for Hampton. Fisher shared team-high rebounding honors with Greg Heckstall and Trevond Barnes with seven apiece.
- Hampton outrebounded Cal 44-37 after trailing 20-19 on the boards at the half.
