IN BRIEF: Demajeo Wiggins' tip-in at the buzzer gave Bowling Green an 81-79 win over Hampton in the opening game of the Detroit Mercy Subregional of the GotPrint.com Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton held a lead through most of the first half as they went 9-of-13 from 3-point land. A Trevond Barnes triple put Hampton up 5-4 just 85 seconds into the game. The lead grew to as much as eight points on a pair of Austin Colbert free throws to lead 16-8 at 14:33 mark early.
- A layup by Michael Laster with 4:44 left trimmed the margin to 35-32 but Hampton went on a 15-6 spurt to lead 50-38 on a Jermaine Marrow triple with 49 seconds left.
- In the second half, the lead went to 10 on a Marrow driving layup with 16:58 left for a 58-48 Hampton advantage. The Falcons swooped back into the game on the heels of an 11-3 run to trim it to 61-59 on a pair of Antwon Lillard free throws with 9:56 remaining.
- In the final minute, Hampton trailed 79-74 after a putback by Lillard with 61 seconds left. Kalin Fisher drained a triple and then a jumper in the lane with 22 seconds left to tie the game at 79.
- Bowling Green had a jumper by Justin Turner miss and a putback by Lillard miss before Wiggins stuck the miss back as the horn sounded for a Bowling Green win.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Hampton had five in double figures topped by Jermaine Marrow with 29 points, six assists and five boards. Fisher and Akim Mitchell added 12 apiece, while Colbert and Ben Stanley chipped in with 10 each.
- The Pirates were so hot in the first half hitting 16-of-28 from the floor (57.1%) but fell to 8-of-30 in the second (26.7%).
- Turner was the leading scorer for Bowling Green with 21 points.
