IN BRIEF: A pair of scoreless droughts for Hampton proved too much as Chattanooga defeated Hampton 58-50 on Friday night in the 2018 home opener for the Lady Pirates.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hampton jumped out to an early 6-0 lead on a bucket by Laren VanArsdale at the 6:30 mark. A 3-pointer by Mahaley Holit kept the lead at six with a 9-3 advantage at 4:18. The Mocs scored the next six to tie it at 9-all on a Shelbie Davenport jumper with 2:05 remaining. Two LaShayla Wright-Ponder free throws gave Hampton a 14-9 lead after one.
- A Charlisa Jenkins jumper with 6:40 left in the half put Hampton up 20-14, but the Mocs scored the next 11 points to lead 25-20 on a triple by Molly Melton at the 2:32 mark. A triple by Alyssa Sweeney and a pair of Ashley Bates free throws in the final 30 seconds helped Hampton trail 31-30 at half.
- Kaylah Lupoe hit a layup at the 4:40 mark of the third for a 39-34 Hampton lead, but that turned into the last points of the quarter as the Mocs went on a 13-0 run that went 50 seconds into the fourth as a Lakelyn Bouldin 3-ball gave the guests a 47-39 lead. Hampton could get no closer than five the rest of the way.
