PIRATES FORCE OT BUT FALL AT SAINT PETER’S

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – An 11-point second half rally helped Hampton force overtime on Saturday but the Pirates fell 83-80 to Saint Peter's in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

A blistering first half for both teams saw Hampton jump out to a 24-13 lead on a Trevond Barnes layup with 11:20 left.  The hosts soared back and took a 36-35 lead on a pair of Quinn Taylor free throws with 4:11 remaining.

Jermaine Marrow hit a jumper with 88 seconds left to put Hampton up 43-38, but Saint Peter's closed the half scoring the last seven points as a buzzer-beating jumper from Davauhnte Turner gave the hosts a 45-43 lead.

In the second half, it was a reverse of the first as Saint Peter's used a Taylor 3-ball with 14:09 remaining to take its 11-point lead at 57-46.  The Pirates answered with a 23-12 run to close the half as a 3-ball from Greg Heckstall with 82 seconds left tied the game at 69.  Saint Peter's missed two layups in the final minute that would've won the game.

The overtime saw the Peacocks fly out to a six-point advantage on a Turner layup at the two minute mark for a 78-72 lead.  Hampton cut it to two twice, last on a pair of Dondre Griffin free throws with 20 seconds left at 82-80, but that was as close as they got.

Heckstall and Kalin Fisher topped Hampton with 22 points apiece.  Fisher added five assists, while Heckstall had six boards.  Trevond Barnes chipped in with 18 points and a team-best eight boards.

Hampton (5-8) now is off until January 10 when they host their first-ever Big South Conference matchup facing Charleston Southern at 7 pm.
