HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team opened its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Saturday splitting a doubleheader with visiting Morgan State. Hampton won the opener 4-2 and dropped a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.
In game one, Hampton scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning as with one out
Sarah Kollas singled up the middle and went to third on a two-out double by
Lorena Alvarez. A wild pitch on an intentional walk to
DaSha Hill plated Kollas for a 1-0 lead. Hill was picked off first, but kept the run down going enough to score Alvarez for a 2-0 advantage.
Morgan State tied it with a two-run double by Hope Kinney in the top of the fifth. Hampton responded with two in its half of the inning on a two-run double by
Cassidy Blackwell to score Hill and
Daniella Milloy who each had singled.
Allyson Babinsack earned the win throwing six innings allowing seven hits and striking out three.Â
Allie Hotetz picked up the save with one inning of one-hit relief. Hill and Blackwell were 2-for-2 each, while Kollas was 2-for-3.
In game two, Hampton trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth before scoring a run. Hill singled to center, stole second and scored on a
Kial Watts infield single.
Hill was 2-for-4 with a run scored to account for half of Hampton's hits in game two. Hotetz took the loss allowing nine hits in 5.1 innings.
These teams conclude a three-game MEAC Northern Division series on Sunday at noon.
