PHILIPPI, WV –
Pierce Johnson scored three times and assisted on one as Hampton used a 7-1 run to close the first half and hold off Alderson-Broaddus 12-8 in a chilly Tuesday afternoon matchup.
The win is the third on the year for the Pirates and the most in a season for the third-year program.
The Battlers jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the 4:30 mark of the first period, but Hampton scored the last three goals of the opening quarter with Johnson evening the match at 3-all with 54 seconds left in the first.
Hampton gave up a Justin Jablonski goal at the 4:49 mark of the second as the Battlers regained a 4-3 advantage. The Pirates used a four-goal flurry to close the first half as
Kendall Sapp connected with
Carter Boone to put Hampton up 7-4 with 1:22 left in the half.
Alderson-Broaddus got within two at 8-6 following a Christian Clarkin tally 5:34 into the third, but Hampton scored four of the next five goals to push the lead to 12-7 on another Boone goal at the 8:33 mark of the fourth.
Hampton (3-7) outshot the hosts 41-22 as freshman
Paxtin Powell recorded his first collegiate victory in goal with five saves. The Pirates now head to New Jersey Institute of Technology for a 4pm start on Saturday.
