IN BRIEF: Hampton won the opening set, but saw the Spartans roar back and take the next three in taking a Friday night Big South volleyball matchup.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

• Megann Delgado topped Hampton with 15 kills and 17 digs
• Lena Washington just missed a double-double with 10 kills and eight digs
• Lena Reed-Petracek had 36 assists
• Maja Petronijevic had 11 digs and two service aces

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Hampton held a 7-5 lead early in the first game before USC Upstate ripped off the next four points to lead 9-7 following a kill by Mikenzie Young-Mullins.
• The Lady Pirates responded with the next seven points with a Gabby Calloway ace to lead 14-9.
• Delgado with a kill put Hampton up 18-11 for its largest lead of the opening game.
• USC Upstate took command in the second game closing with a 7-1 run to close out with a 25-17 win.
• In the third game, the Spartans raced out to a 10-4 lead en route to a 25-13 win.
• The final game saw the guests jump out 13-4 but Hampton trimmed it to 22-18 after an attack error.
