LADY PIRATES FALL IN TOURNEY FINALE

LADY PIRATES FALL IN TOURNEY FINALE

Final Score: Maryland Eastern Shore 3, Hampton 1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21)

Location: Princess Anne, Md.

Records: Hampton – 5-5, Maryland Eastern Shore – 3-6

The Short Story: HU won the first set, but that would be it as Maryland Eastern Shore defeated the Lady Pirates in four games. The loss snapped a five-match win streak, the longest for HU since winning six-straight from September 22 to October 6, 2017.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS
  • Megann Delgado registered her fourth double-double in 10 matches this season, finishing with 14 kills and 10 digs.
  • Kyndall Nicholas and Sasha Saric were both named to the Henson's Hawk Invite All-Tournament Team.
  • Saric posted eight kills as Nicholas finished with 11 on a .471 hitting percentage.
  • Maryland Eastern Shore  capitalized on a smart net game to win the match, registering just nine errors all match as opposed to 23 for HU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maryland Eastern Shore led 23-19 before a miraculous Lady Pirate comeback clinched the first set for the visitors. Lena Washington started the run with a kill. A pair of Nicholas kills sandwiched a Saric service ace to tie the game at 23. A bad set and another Nicholas kill ended the set as HU garnered the final six points.
  • UMES led the duration of the second and third sets to take a 2-1 set lead. HU rallied in the third to knot the score twice, the latest coming at 21-all, but a three-point sprint by the Hawks ended the Lady Pirates' chances.
  • Hampton led briefly, 12-11, in the fourth set. The Hawks rushed back out to a 14-12 lead and held the edge the remainder of the way.
WHAT'S NEXT
Hampton will travel to the Georgetown-George Washington Tournament next weekend for four matches. The Lady Pirates will face Coppin State and George Washington on Friday before battling Alabama A&M and Georgetown on Saturday.
