NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Hampton University men's indoor track and field team opened the 2019 portion of their schedule on Friday night by capturing the HBCU Battle held at The Armory.
Hampton scored 112 points to outgain Morgan State (90) and Bowie State along with Coppin State who tied for third with 51 points out of a 13-team field.
The Pirates garnered seven first place finishes in the meet with Brenan Garrett taking the 60 meters (6.80),
Jaelen Williams winning the 400 meters (48.44),
Tayvon Burris winning the 800 (1:52.65),
Nicholas Edwards in the shot put (50-2.5),
Joshua Hunter in the weight throw (56-1.75) and the 4x400 meters relay group of Garrett,
Jerrick Powell, Burris and Williams in 3:21.05.
Like the women's team, the men had several events where they garnered a group of points getting 14 in the 60 hurdles, 15 in the 400 meters, 18 in the weight throw and 800 meters along with 11 in the shot put.
In the 60 hurdles,
Charles Graham took fourth (8.11),
Dylan Beard was fifth (8.16), Williams was sixth (8.21) and Powell was seventh (8.30). Hunter joined Edwards in the shot put finishing eighth with a toss of 43-3.75, while Edwards took second in the weight throw with a toss of 50-9.25.
Geoffrey McCullough took second in the 800 (1:55.24) and Powell was fourth in the 400 (49.04).
They also competed in the Great Dane Classic at the University of Albany where they repeated the group finish in the 60 hurdles as Graham took third (7.98), Bears was fourth (8.07) and Powell took eighth (8.31). In the 400 meters
Derrick Price was ninth in 50.32.
They'll next compete at the VMI Invite on January 18-19.
