SCHOOL RECORD 3-POINTERS LEAD PIRATES OVER LANCERS

FARMVILLE, Va. -- A blistering night from the floor that saw Hampton University set a school record for three-pointers made in a game with 16 helped lead the Pirates over the Longwood Lancers 96-83 on Wednesday.

Hampton ended the night 16-of-24 from three-point land (66.7%) as the previous record was 15 at Howard on March 3, 2011.  The record breaker came on a Trevond Barnes 3-ball for the final points of the night.

The Pirates used a 15-0 run early in the game to lead 26-10 on a pair of Akim Mitchell free throws with 11:58 left to finish the nearly five minute run.  Longwood responded with a 22-5 blitz to take a 32-31 advantage on a Shabooty Phillips 3-ball with 6:05 left.

Hampton followed with 11 straight points as a Jermaine Marrow steal and layup put Hampton up 42-32 with just under three minutes left in the half.  Marrow drained a 3-ball, Hampton's tenth of the first half, for the halftime margin of 50-39.

In the second half, Hampton opened with a 16-4 run as Mitchell drained a 3-ball with 17:17 left and then hit another for a four-point play as Hampton took its largest lead of the half at 66-43 with 16:38 left.

Marrow was the leading scorer with 22 points and seven assists as he paced five in double figures.  Barnes was next with a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards, while Mitchell was 4-of-5 from the field, 4-of-4 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the field for 17 points.  Kalin Fisher scored all 17 of his points in the second half to go with team high eight assists and Trey Carver added 12 and seven boards.

Hampton was 29-of-50 from the floor (58%), 16-of-24 from 3-point range (66.7%) and 20-of-26 from the line (76.9%).  The Pirates outrebounded Longwood 35-23.

Next up for Hampton will be a visit to High Point on Saturday for a 7pm tip.
