CHARLESTON, S.C. – Playing in their first ever Big South Conference contest, Hampton used a 10-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to regain control and score a 74-66 win over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon.
Hampton (5-7, 1-0) trailed 9-4 early after a 3-pointer by Breannah Bretches but responded with a 14-2 run as a
Charlisa Jenkins putback gave Hampton an 18-11 advantage with 1:34 left in the first. The lead grew to as much as 11 points in the second quarter on a triple by
Ashley Bates to lead 32-21 with 4:37 remaining.
In the third quarter, a
Laren VanArsdale free throw with 3:47 left put Hampton up 49-38. The hosts responded with an 11-3 run to trim the lead to 52-49 on a Weknyne Dumorne jumper with 1:13 left. Bates responded with a traditional 3-point play to take the lead back to 55-49 with 42 seconds left.
Charleston Southern (3-9, 0-1) took a lead with 6:55 remaining as a Bretches layup capped a 9-2 run to lead 58-57. Â The Lady Pirates stormed back with layups by VanArsdale, Bates and a 3-point play by
Mahaley Holit to regain momentum and lead 64-58 with 4:49 left.
Bates topped all scorers with her first double-double of the year having 22 points and 10 rebounds to go with three blocked shots.Â
Kaylah Lupoe joined her in the double-double club with 10 points and 10 boards. Holit added 16 points and four assists, while VanArsdale had 12 points and five helpers.
Hampton concludes its four-game road swing on Tuesday night in Asheville, N.C. taking on UNC Asheville at 7 pm.

POST-GAME NOTES
- The pair of double-doubles were the first time a Hampton tandem recorded double-doubles in the same game since Malia Tate-DeFreitas (18 pts/10 reb) and Lupoe (17 pts/12 reb) pulled the feat at James Madison on Dec. 2, 2016.
- All-time series is now tied 1-1.
- The three blocked shots for Bates is a career-high, coming off her performance at Columbia where she recorded career highs in points (25) and assists (6).
- Bates also recorded career highs in field goals made (10) and attempted (20).
- Holit recorded career highs in points (16), free throws attempted (5) and field goals made (5) while matching career highs in field goals attempted (15) and free throws made (4).
- LaShayla Wright-Ponder scored seven points, but had a career high in rebounds (11) and matched her career bests in assists (2) and steals (2).
