FOOTBALL DROPS HOME FINALE TO NATIONALLY-RANKED OWLS

HAMPTON, Va. – A 14-yard scoring pass from Deondre Francois to James Stanley proved to be the lone touchdown on the day for Hampton as they fell to nationally-ranked Kennesaw State 50-7 on Senior Day at a blustery Armstrong Stadium.

Senior Shai McKenzie joined an elite group on Saturday leading Hampton with 80 yards 15 carries which put him over 1,000 yards on the season.  He became the first Hampton running back since Jeremiah Schwartz in 2012 to break 1,000-yards in a season as he now sits at 1,047.  He needs 63 yards at Monmouth next week to break into the single-season top 10 for Hampton.

The Owls, ranked 11th in the FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the Stats Poll, jumped on the Pirates scoring three times in the first quarter on a 15-yard run by Shaquil Terry, a one-yard run by Tommy Broany and a 40-yard scamper by Bronson Rechsteiner.  The last one came with four seconds left in the quarter to push the Owls up 21-0.

Kennesaw State scored twice in a three-minute span of the second quarter as Bryant found Caleb O'Neal for a 67-yard scoring pass and Nathan Robertson hit a 32-yard field goal to lead 31-0 with 7:54 left in the half.

Another pair of scoring runs for Kennesaw took the advantage to 43-0 with 6:34 left after one-yard plunges by Kyle Glover and Kevin Ficklin.

Hampton took advantage of a 23-yard punt return by KeyRon Catlett to start a drive on the KSU 27.  After a McKenzie 13-yard run, Francois connected with Stanley across the middle for the 14-yard scoring pass to get Hampton on the board at 43-7 with 2:14 left.

Freshmen linebackers Mason King (15 tackles) and DeAndre Faulk (13) topped Hampton on defense.  King added two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

The Pirates close out their season on November 23 facing another nationally-ranked opponent in Monmouth University at noon on ESPN3.
