The student-athletes at Hampton University challenged each other to donate a dollar for the purchase of Turkeys. Collectively, the students reached their goal and were able to give 15 turkeys to St. Augustine Episcopal Church that is located in Newport News.
Â
Judith Neal, the parish administrator at St. Augustine was very appreciative of the donation from the students saying "the turkeys donated will bless several families."
Â
She shared a faith story regarding the power of prayer. Neal said that she prayed to God about having food to service enough people in need of a hot meal during the Thanksgiving holiday. After praying, she was excited when she received the call from a former football player from Hampton University,
Owen Obasuyi.
Â
"We chose St. Augustine Episcopal Church because it's local, and the church has a history of service and giving back to the community, saidObasuyi."
Â
He conceived the idea of the power of one dollar to collect enough funds to purchase turkeys. "As a college student, I am aware of the financial struggle that college students go through, and I knew that student-athletes could at least commit to giving one dollar to bless several families," he said.
Â
Dr. Genese Lavalais, Director for Athletic Academic Support/ Life Skills, said: "I am thrilled that the student-athletes reached their goal and were able to come together for a great cause."
