LATE GAME HEROICS LIFT PIRATES OVER PEACOCKS

HAMPTON, Va. – Sophomore Ben Stanley had 33 points and a career high five blocked shots, none bigger than a three-point attempt with five seconds left as Hampton defeated Saint Peter's 70-67 to finish non-conference play on Saturday.

In a second half that saw neither team hold more than a four-point lead and the lead change hands eight times, Hampton started with a 34-27 lead before the Peacocks scored 10 of the first 12 points to take a 37-36 lead on a triple by Daryl Banks, III with 17:15 left.

The lead stayed within one bucket for the next 14 minutes as a Stanley free throw with 3:48 left evened the game at 61.   A jumper by Fousseyni Drame and a tip-in by KC Ndefo gave Saint Peter's its largest lead of the half at 65-61 with 2:09 left.

Hampton scored the next seven points as a free throw by Dondre Griffin put Hampton up 68-65 with 23 seconds left.  A pair of Matthew Lee free throws trimmed the lead to 68-67, but Stanley hit one of two to put Hampton up 69-67 with 20 seconds remaining.

Saint Peter's had a three-point attempt by Banks from the right wing blocked by Stanley with five seconds left and Stanley hit one free throw to ice the win.  Davion Warren added 15 points, while Greg Heckstall had 10 points, five assists and four rebounds for Hampton.

The Pirates start Big South play on January 4 hosting Charleston Southern at 6 pm.
