MEN SNAP SKID WITH WIN OVER NORFOLK STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – Ben Stanley scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds to lead three in double figures for Hampton on Saturday night as they snapped a five-game losing streak in defeating Norfolk State 64-53.

After trailing 9-0 in the first five minutes, a Stanley jumper got the Pirates on the board at 14:08 to trail 9-2.  The Spartans held a lead for the first 19 minutes of the half and were leading 17-12 on a Steven Whitley dunk with 7:15 left to lead 17-12.

Hampton closed the half on a 10-2 run as a pair of Stanley free throws with 46 seconds left tied the game at 19.  Russell Dean found Dondre Griffin for a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to put the Pirates up for the first time at 22-19.

In a second half that saw seven ties and six lead changes, neither team held more than a three-point advantage for the first 15 minutes.  A layup by Stanley off a Griffin feed put Hampton up 49-46 with 5:15 left.  On the ensuing possession, Amir Smith stole the ball and threw down a thunderous dunk that put Hampton up 51-46 with 4:40 remaining.

That dunk, which energized the crowd, kick started a 13-5 run to close out the game as Hampton went 6-of-7 from the line in the last 79 seconds to ice the win.

Greg Heckstall had a season high 14 points, while Smith had a season high 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.  The Pirates hit 57.1% in the second half (12-of-21) from the floor and 16-of-22 from the line (72.7%) to help snare the win.

Whitley paced Norfolk State with 20 points, while Devante Carter added 11 and six rebounds.

Hampton is now off until December 18 when they face Southern Illinois on the road.
