BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- In a game that had nine ties and 10 lead changes, Chris Clemmons went for 48 points going 22-of-24 from the foul line as Campbell held off a Hampton comeback to defeat the Pirates 87-84 on Wednesday in Buies Creek, N.C.
Kalin Fisher scored a season high 34 points and
Jermaine Marrow added 20 with six assists as Hampton got to within 84-82 with seven seconds left on a 3-ball by Fisher. A free throw from Ja'Cor Nelson with five seconds left ended the rally and the game.
Campbell took an eight-point lead on a pair of Clemmons free throws with 3:48 left in the half to lead 35-27. Hampton responded with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 37 on a 3-pointer by Fisher with 1:38 left. A 3-pointer by Isaac Chatman proved the difference as a pair of free throws by
Trevond Barnes and two by Clemmons put the hosts up 42-39 at half.
Hampton opened the second half with a 7-0 run to take its largest lead at 46-42 on a layup by Marrow with 18:31 left. A pair of Clemmons free throws and a layup in a 12 second span evened the game at 46. The lead went back and forth until a
Greg Heckstall jumper with 9:28 left gave Hampton its last lead at 59-57.
Fisher was three points off his previous career high of 37 set last year against Savannah State.  With his 20 points, Marrow is now 29 points from moving into the all-time top five in career points. Oining them in double figures was
Dondre Griffin with 11 points. Barnes had seven points, seven boards and two blocks, while Heckstall had six points, seven boards and a career best six assists.
Hampton returns home to face High Point on Saturday night at 6 pm.
